High Rise
The Game
High Rise was born out of my fear of heights, fear that strikes me even when walking over grates on a sidewalk and fear looking out windows in a city enamored with height. In this game, you control a lil piece of me making my way downtown in a lil city street. There's no checkpoints though; there's always newer and bigger heights and it's always starting back at square one.
Controls
WASD - to move
MOUSE - to look
SPACE - to jump
R - restart after death
The Process
This game was surprisingly fun to make. The best part was trying to get into the mindset of the player to make a decent little game and seeing what people reacted to during playtesting. Something I started to hate more towards the end was the weird physics interactions that affected the player's movement. Despite it seeming okay after fixing one section, adding more to the level would make it become unpredictable again. At some point, it just became part of the game and trying to maintain control over the situation. Kinda symbolic, actually.
I did make a bad decision of focusing too much on trying to perfect and optimize code I already had though, and if I hadn't I could've perhaps added a bit more to the game, like other mechanics or some more forms of decoration.

I love how you model a city even Robert doesn't want you to do it!
You rebel! And it looks so good
this is too hard I think?? there is no visible shadow beneath the character, so it is hard to judge the landing... I wish it was a little easier, or I wish the platforms were much bigger!
Really well-built city environment! Character model is cute too. Jumping is a little finicky and sometimes the tiles didn't bounce, but maybe that was intentional?
I really like the architecture of the map! The buildings and street look really good! I also do not like heights, so walking around on the top of these platforms was also really anxiety inducing for me :o
The jump is a little bit awkward--it took me a couple of tries to realise that the best way to jump was to hit space first and then while I was in the air, press movement keys in the direction that I wanted to go. Speaking of the jump, I really like that the height of the jump changed with the amount that I held the space bar!
It's a really pretty backdrop! Sometimes the spacebar is a little sticky, although that may be a WebGL problem.
